About us

We test food tracking apps so you don't have to

Food Tracking Lab is an independent research project. We buy every app, log thousands of real meals, and score each one on a published rubric — with no affiliate links and no sponsored placements bending the results.

Why we exist

The app stores are full of food trackers promising effortless, accurate logging. Most reviews of them are thin, affiliate-driven listicles that rank whichever app pays the highest commission. We started Food Tracking Lab in 2024 because the people who rely on these apps — to lose weight, manage a condition, fuel training, or simply understand what they eat — deserve testing that is rigorous, transparent and impossible to buy.

What makes our reviews different

Our editorial principles

We hold ourselves to a published editorial policy: accuracy first, independence always, corrections in public. We are also careful about the line between healthy tracking and harm — our reviewers flag apps that drift toward disordered-eating territory, and we point readers to support resources rather than pretend tracking is right for everyone.

Food Tracking Lab is an independent editorial project led by registered dietitians and app-testing specialists. Meet the full team on our authors page.
How does Food Tracking Lab make money?
We are reader-supported and deliberately avoid affiliate links and sponsored content, which can bias rankings. See our no-affiliate disclosure for the full picture.
Is calorie tracking right for everyone?
No. Tracking is a tool, not a moral imperative, and it is not safe for everyone — particularly anyone with a history of disordered eating. Please read our eating-disorder resources and medical disclaimer.
