Dr. Elena Marsh, PhD, RD

Editor-in-Chief & Lead Nutrition Analyst

Boston, MA · Joined September 2024

Elena Marsh founded Food Tracking Lab after a decade splitting her time between clinical practice and academic nutrition research. She holds a PhD in human nutrition and is a Registered Dietitian, and she has spent years watching patients try — and abandon — calorie tracking apps that were either inaccurate or impossible to stick with.

At Food Tracking Lab she owns the parts of the rubric that decide whether an app can be trusted: the weighed-meal accuracy protocol, the diet-analysis battery and the database-quality audits. She built our reference-meal library against USDA FoodData Central and personally reviews every accuracy result before it is published.

Elena’s position is unfashionably boring: a food tracker’s first job is to tell you the truth about what you ate. Everything else — streaks, badges, AI flourishes — is secondary to whether the numbers are right.
